Rafael Nadal Makes History in a Nearly 5 Hour Match
2 min readThe Men’s U.S Open Single Championship saw a nail bitting 4.5 hour match in New York today. The Spaniard Rafael Nadal went head to head with the 23-year old Russian Daniil Medvedev for the Championship. This gives Nadal a total of 19 major titles which is only one behind the all-time great Roger Federer.
This match started with Nadal on the top of his game winning the first two sets 7-5 and 6-3. However, Medvedev wasn’t leaving without a fight and managed to win the next two sets 7-5 and 6-4. Making for and explosive 5th set decider. The stadium had the fans seething through this long match, and Nadal delivered with the 5th set coming to 6-4.
Nadal looked a bit shaken toward the end of the 4th set knowing this 5th would be all or nothing. What Nadal has accomplished in his career is nothing short of amazing, and now he’ll be looking to tie Rodger for the most grand slam wins.
Medvedev gave him a few scares and a run for his money literally. Nadal now pockets a whopping $3.85 million grand price from J.P Morgen and another trophy to add to the fast-growing pile. This match was tennis at its best and the story almost played like David and Goliath up until that last ever important set.
Now Nadal will be looking to his next major, and Medvedev can look forward to what will be if this match is anything to go by a long illustrious career. He is young and clearly extremely talented to make one of the greats sweat like he did.
