Saturday night the Australian Boomers basketball team achieved the unthinkable and took team USA to the cleaners with a massive historical win. The final score coming to 98 to 94.
The Australian basketball team has never achieved such a win in nearly 26 tries. Over 51,000 fans attended this action-packed game and unbelievably it has been 55 years since the Boomers beat team USA in any basketball match.
The Boomers and all their fans tried to keep a lid on the excitement that mounted around the country, but truly just couldn’t contain it. Many Americans and basketball experts would downplay the significance of this since it is just an exhibition match, but if this win is anything to go by the Boomers can now stand a chance in grabbing that gold medal in the FIBA World cup and looking to them future the Olympics.
Team USA coach Gregg Popovichhad this to say after Saturdays match, “I want to start by congratulating the Boomers,” he told reporters, “The Boomers were really great tonight. It’s really a testament to how long they’ve stuck together to get this accomplished tonight. They were competitive, they executed really well … so that needs to be said. And, as I told you all after the last game, Patty’s a pain in the ass.”
It stands to conclude he was not very happy but humble in congratulating the Boomers on their historic win. There is still a lot of game to play in China on the international basketball scope.
Aussie coach Andrej Lemanis had this to say in reinforcing there is still more practice and work to be done, “So, obviously, it’s part of the process that we don’t get too high on the highs and too low on the lows. The pleasing thing is that we got better today.”
One thing is for certain Australia, Hugh Jackman, and the Boomers can sleep and feel so good for the next few weeks going into the FIBA tournament starting in China next week.
